Jesus begins his Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5. He had compassion on them (Matt 6:36).

The beatitudes may seem paradoxical, but they are true from God’s point of view.

-the kingdom of heaven… it is operational right now, it’s not of this world, but it’s coming

-blessed… happy

-poor in spirit… internal, heart condition, Psalm 51:17, humble and realizing our condition. God is concerned about our heart. (Rom. 7:18, 1 Tim 1:15)

Happy are those who recognize their bankruptcy before God.

The poor in spirit:
1. They understand their lack. (Ps. 8)
2. They know they need help. (Mark 5)
3. Not too proud to ask for what they need (Matt. 15)
4. Understand that what God offers is exactly what they need.
