Today we look at Exodus 20:12, Honor your father and mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
What does this commandment do?
1. It establishes the basic family unit… father, mother, children. (Rom. 1:18ff)
2. It establishes the family structure.
– What parents should do
– What children should do
Authority: power to declare right from wrong, power to demand right, power to punish wrong. The scriptures outline this authority. (1 Cor. 11:3, Luke 22:42, 1 Peter 1:2, Eph. 5:22, Eph. 6:1)
Biblical commands for children:
1. Honor (Exodus 20:12)
2. Obey (Eph. 6:1)
Biblical warnings and punishments (Ex. 21:12, Ex. 21:17). It is a dangerous thing to dishonor one’s parents.
This commandment has a promise, “that you may live long and it will go well with you.” (Heb 12:7)
